Slate and Tiled Roof Replacement
Slate and Tiled Roof Replacement
A new covering is only part of a new roof. We look at the existing roof, its edges and the details around it before discussing what should be replaced.
Start with the condition of the whole roof
A slipped tile and a worn-out roof are different jobs. Before committing to replacement, it is worth establishing whether the problem is confined to one detail or whether defects are spread across the covering. Repeated patching can leave the same underlying problem unresolved; replacing a serviceable roof can be unnecessary.
Ashurst & Sons carries out slate and tiled roofing as well as repairs. Tell us what has happened, how long it has been happening and whether anyone has repaired it before. That history helps frame the inspection; it does not replace it.
If you need help with a leak or a small damaged area, start with roof repairs. For a complete flat-roof covering, see flat-roof replacement.

What belongs in a replacement discussion
| Part of the roof | What to establish |
|---|---|
| Existing covering | Which slopes and materials are included, what is being removed and whether any parts will be retained. |
| Underlying condition | What can be inspected beforehand, what may only be visible after removal and how further work will be agreed. |
| Edges and junctions | The scope around ridges, verges, valleys, walls and chimneys, including any separate lead work. |
| Access and site | Scaffolding or other access, deliveries, protection of the area below and removal of the old materials. |
| Completion | The checks, clearing-up and completion details that will apply to the agreed work. |
Two prices are not directly comparable if one includes access, removal and junction work while the other covers the visible tiles only. Ask for the differences to be made clear before choosing. If an item is excluded, that should be understood before the job starts.
Match the choice to the roof, not just the colour
Slate and tile give different appearances, and there are choices within each category. The existing roof, proposed product, roof shape and surrounding details all need to be considered. A neighbouring roof can be a useful visual reference, but it is not a specification for your property.
Bring photos of the finish you prefer and explain what matters most: keeping a similar appearance, addressing repeated repairs or planning a wider refurbishment. We can then discuss the practical roofing work rather than treating every enquiry as the same package.
The sequence also matters. Access and preparation come before the covering, and the condition found during removal may affect the agreed work. There is no reliable universal completion time for every roof; weather, access, size and the actual scope need to be considered together.
For the homeowner side of the comparison, read roof replacement cost factors and slate versus tile roofs.
Tell us about the roof you want to replace
Send your postcode, the type of property and photos taken safely from the ground. Include any previous repair history and explain whether the roof is leaking now. Do not climb onto it to measure or inspect it.
Frequently asked questions
Does a roof leak mean I need a complete new roof?
No. A local defect may be repairable. The condition of the wider covering and underlying roof matters more than the presence of one leak. An inspection helps separate a repair from a replacement job.
Can you replace slate and tiled roofs?
Yes. Full slate and tiled roofs are part of our roofing work. The proposed covering and associated work are agreed for the particular roof, rather than chosen from a photograph alone.
Can I get a fixed price by sending a photo?
Photos help us understand the enquiry, but they do not show every part of the roof or what is underneath. Ask what the quote includes and how any concealed damage would be dealt with before work begins.
Do you cover my area?
We are based in Peterlee and cover Durham, Sunderland, Newcastle, Hartlepool, Stockton-on-Tees, Middlesbrough and Darlington. Send your postcode with your enquiry so we can discuss the job and access.
