Ashurst supplied block-paving project

Driveway Cost

What Affects Block Paving Driveway Cost?

The blocks are the part you see. Ground preparation, access, edging and drainage can be just as important when comparing the job and its cost.

Start below the blocks

The existing surface is only part of the picture

A new block-paved driveway may replace an existing surface or form part of a larger outdoor project. The area matters, but so do what must be removed, access for work and materials, the condition below the surface and where water will go.

Tell Ashurst how the drive is used, whether there are existing drainage problems and whether levels at the entrance or beside the house are changing. Those details are more useful than choosing a block colour before the practical requirements are understood.

For the installation enquiry, use our driveway service. Patios and pedestrian paving have a different use and are covered by paving and patios.

StageClarify before accepting
Measure and useThe included area, intended vehicle use and any paths or entrance sections.
RemovalWhich existing materials are removed and how waste is handled.
Ground and baseWhat preparation is included and what assumptions are being made about the existing construction.
Levels and drainageWhat happens at thresholds, boundaries and outlets; identify any additional assessment needed.
Blocks and edgesThe chosen product, pattern, border and edge restraints.
Access and completionMaterial access, protection, clearing-up, payment terms and the guarantee for the agreed work.

Ask the contractor to identify exclusions. A quotation for a new surface over retained preparation is not the same proposal as removing and rebuilding the construction. Neither description should be assumed from a photograph or a short headline price.

Where differences arise

Use the same brief for every quotation

Restricted access can change how materials are brought in and removed. An awkward shape can involve different edging and cutting from a simple rectangle. Existing water problems need to be discussed rather than hidden beneath a new-looking finish.

Agree the proposed area and finish before comparing quotations. If you change the border, include a path or add fencing while collecting prices, make sure each contractor is pricing the revised brief. Keep separate options clearly marked so they are not confused with the base job.

This guide deliberately does not invent a fixed driveway price or an example claimed to be a customer job. Ask for a site-specific quotation with the assumptions and exclusions explained. That is the basis for a useful comparison.

If you are comparing surface types, see block paving versus resin. Comparing a material is not a claim that Ashurst installs every surface mentioned.

Your next step

Show us the entrance as well as the driveway

Send a wider photo of the area, your postcode, any approximate dimensions you already have and the access route. Mention drainage concerns and which parts of the outdoor space belong in the quote.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

  • Is a price per square metre enough to compare quotes?

Not by itself. The same area can involve different removal, excavation, access, edging and drainage work. Compare the stated scope and exclusions as well as the rate.

  • Does replacing the surface include replacing the base?

Not automatically. The condition of the existing construction needs assessing, and the quote should state what is being retained or replaced.

  • Can you quote from a photo?

Photos and approximate dimensions help explain the enquiry, but they do not establish ground conditions, levels or all access requirements. They are a starting point, not a full site assessment.

  • Do these figures include a finished driveway price?

This guide does not publish numeric Ashurst price bands. It explains the items to compare so a site-specific quote can be understood and agreed.
